  • First Saturday of the Month DAR Research Assistance

10 a.m.-Noon in the Genealogy Room of the Blake Library

Jointly sponsored by the Halpatiokee Chapter and MCGS.

People interested in joining the DAR and identifying their patriot ancestor can receive assistance with the application process during this time.

MCGS and the Halpatiokee Chapter NSDAR have a special relationship and share many members. Besides providing their expertise on these days, the Halpatiokee Chapter also generously donates materials to the Blake Library Genealogy Room.

  • Martin County Obituary Copy Service

Stuart’s long-time newspaper, the Stuart News, is not available online, but MCGS member volunteers created two obituary indices of the newspaper to help family history researchers. The indices span 1913 to 2003 and also include April 2006. They contain individuals’ names, and the date and page of the newspaper in which their obituary, death notice or other mention of their death was found.

    Access the indices here.

To obtain a photocopy of one of these obituaries, email mcgsfl@gmail.com and put Obituary Look-Up in your subject line.

More recent obituaries are available through the TCPalm website and legacy.com.

  • The Family History Guide

The Family History Guide Association has put together a website to help family historians at all experience levels make the most of their research. The website includes tips and tutorials, as well as activities to introduce other people to family history.

Specific sections focus on using FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage and Findmypast. Access The Family History Guide here. Use is free and does not require a subscription.

  • Genealogy Organizing Systems

A report with tips for organizing your genealogy records, documents and information.

  • Legacy Cemetery Project Information

In 1996, the Martin County Genealogical Society formed a cemetery committee to record all tombstones and memorials in the county. Doug Poulter led the committee first. Walt Bruetsch followed him. The committee's work continued for several years and expanded to include columbaria and memorial gardens. Links to information from the cemeteries and columbaria that they visited and recorded is below. In the case of some larger cemeteries, they drew information from burial records.

MCGS offers these pages as an archive of their work. More detailed cemetery resources are available now than were available in 1996, and MCGS recommends also using Billion Graves or Find a Grave to find the burial information you seek. We wish, however, to thank the original committee members for their diligence and hard work in providing a much-needed resource for users when online genealogy was in its infancy.
